ADHD is a term that stands for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and it is a common Neurodevelopmental disorder possessed by children. Some symptoms of ADHD, such as memory loss or losing items, speaking too much, and lack of patience, can quite often complicate school, family life, or interactions with friends.
While this disease may seem very real, throwing medications at the issue is only a short-term solution to a long-term problem.Rather than learning self-control, these hyperactive kids will continue to use their pills as a crutch until they end up requiring even more.
To assist young men who have ADHD, one man came up with a unique approach! Jason Wilson of the Cave of Adullam utilizes martial arts to counteract ADHD symptoms. This idea is to provide his students with an outlet for their energy while at the same time improving additional skills that will help them in everyday life.
In this video, Jason shows a drill that helps his student manage distractions sufferers may face at school as well as in other areas of their life. Sharath Wilson tells the story, “While the student featured in this drill have not been diagnosed with ADHD, they do from time to time exude a lack of focus similar to a majority of males his age. No child is born naturally focused because focus is a learned skill.”
The student then balances a ball on top of a fight stick and then sits perfectly still to keep it in position. Jason then attempts to distract him by lightly tapping him, punching the air close to his head, and getting into his space, yet the student stays still and continues his breaths. It is really impressive just to watch the teacher get so close!
The drill not only helps kids with ADHD combat distractions but also helps these students improve stillness skills, focus, as well as mental fortitude. It’s really very impressive to watch!
